Is R5000 enough for an intern?

The answer to this question is tricky.

The best way to devise whether this is good enough is to ask yourself the following questions:

What will be intern be doing?

If I were them, would I feel that the stipend was fair?

Can I afford to offer this intern more – does it make business sense?

You could probably ask yourself a few more questions but with the above, you are keeping you, your company and your intern in mind. There are instances where interns get paid the same salary as a Junior (R8k-R12k) and there are companies who rigidly stick to the minimum wage scenario.

Be the company that places emphasis good incentives for hard work. If you have the means to pay your intern more than the norm, and they’re doing a pretty amazing job then incentivise them.
